El Picaflor (Spanish for hummingbird) is full of colors and full of life. It welcomes you to see folk art from the Andes. The original pieces on display include brilliantly crafted ceramics, colorful and intricate patchwork art, alpaca garments, crafts, and objects used in the traditional folk medicine in the Andes. We carry the works of Peruvian weaver-painter Maximo Laura. His tapestries are made with alpaca wool and cotton. The motives are either figurative or geometrical stylization of millennial Andean themes in contemporary shapes and colors. We also show Andean retablo-maker Nicario Jimenez. His portable wooden boxes are filled with brightly colored figurines made from a doughy mixture of boiled potato and gypsum powder. His ongoing work is on display throughout the year.
